I had a similar problem on my 2014 which was the switch on the shifter that told the system it was in Park. Had to replace the entire shifter mechanism to fix it which wasn't cheap. I don't know if the 2016 has the same shifter mechanism though.

It is possible the shifter unit is bad but more likely you'll need to replace the shifter switch.
It is a known issue with some vehicles.
SB-10105637-2532.pdf (nhtsa.gov)
The switch is part number KDY0-46-040
The part is around $65.00 depending on where you get it.
You'll need to add in labor unless you do it yourself.

That sounds good for him. On the 2014, the shifter and switch were a single unit.
