I'm still involved with Mazda. The diesel engine was redesigned in 2018. I haven't seen the same issues from earlier models in the 2018 onwards models.

Biggest issue is they are no good for town cars. They will have other issues from short trips.

Ok thanks for clarifying I do like the drive of the Diesel CX5 from my test drive 2019 model, but the diesel issues were still a concern and I hadn't seen much reports of resolution in later models years after they came out. In terms of my driving it will be occasional round town to the shops a few miles maybe twice a week (def not everyday) and then one main motorway drive 100 miles round trip at least once a week. That should be sufficient right?

Should be ok. Keep a close eye on oil level. Also change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months for peace of mind.

Brilliant thanks. I was set on a Lexus for reliability and it looks great imo - the NX300H, but the drive was gutless with the whining CVT. The Mazda CX5 was much more fun to drive and while not quite as luxurious if it can be close to Lexus with reliability then i think that may sway me that way. Decision to make now!
