Default Differential Service

Any other members being offered "differential service" by dealers? My gf went into dealer for oil change and they offered to change the rear differential fluid for $110. I asked to her to point out in the service schedule where that was recommended. They couldn't. Anybody know anything about this that I may not?

The transmission fluid IMHO (based on servicing hundreds of transmission) should be changed at least at the 50k mark. Mazda claims that the service life is "lifetime" however oil analysis shows that the fluid does in fact needs servicing in many cases at least 50-80k miles.
If you are in doubt and simply feel "lucky" don't do the preventative maintenance. You can also get a small amount of oil from the dip stick area and send it in and have it analyzed. then you would know for sure what to do!

Unless members have had an oil analysis performed most responses will be speculation to the condition of their oil and internal condition of parts , without inspection with a service fluid/filter change and analysis of oil to check any damage starting to become present which in most cases can be found in the oil within the transmission.

If you change your own oil, the differential service isn't that difficult, they have a
drain plug and fill hole. A bottle of OEM fluid or Mobil 1 85-140 gear oil will work.
It's a 'fill to overflow'.

Why don't you tell us? Other than using 75W-90 fluid instead of the
thicker 85W-140, what's your problem?

well I am not going to argue or debate with you... again on a thread ...... LOL this is not a vehicle of the past (50s, 60,s 70, 80, 90,) its clear you dont even understand that oil used in a vehicle is not thicker thinner but has a viscosity rating. LOL

anyway my responses was "geared" (pun) towards the differential in the transmission and not so much the center or rear differentials available. But the information applies the same for preventative maintenance .

Thanks Dennis. I'll probably do the gear oil replacement myself as you suggest but didn't think it was needed at less than 30K miles. 2017-cx-5-scheduled-maintenance.pdf

I doubt that the differential would need servicing before 60-75K, if even that early.

How can you make any kind of open prediction like this without knowing all the facts about the vehicle its owner, the maintenance already done where it is operated etc etc etc.. ROLMAO!!!!

Dude you need to get up with time and stop the "2cents" information because that is really all it s worth. 2 pennies! I realize at one time it seems you may have been a "MECHANIC" in your time but even then some of the advise I read is and was inaccurate then! You likely still think that if you put a battery on the ground it will discharge? LOL

Look the differential is a enclosed housing that produces heat and the fluid will break down cause varnish to form and eventfully will effect thing like bearing and seals. There is no predictable time period that this can start to happen. So if you are going to keep a vehicle for 5-10 years it is simple math that a few dollar spent now to do early maintenance like changing the fluids ENCLUDING DIFFERENTAIL will reduce wear and possible bearing going bad.

Besides I said at least 50k miles for the differential but I think you read that before you made you 2cent advise .

what's your point responding the last anyway the OP has already taken your 2cent advise anyway. Maybe you simply did not like getting caught for your less then accurate information calling the fluid thicker thinner.... LOL

Well now that we've heard from the EXPERT, we can all rest easy.
Yes 50K would be fine as well. Many a auto will go 150 thousand to
200 thousand miles and not changed that dif fluid at all.
