Does anybody have any insight on the chip shortage and how it will affect prices and availability of the 2022 models? I'm looking to buy soon but like some of the upgrades on the 2022 model and can wait unless the asking price will be a lot higher.

Nope- nobody knows this info. I would personally wait and see how '22 shapes up as the car will be upgraded significantly. I don't think you will get a deal on a '21 as inventory is almost nonexistent at this point.

Just for the sake of new seats, I would test drive both the new 22 and 21. I expect the 22 seats to be hopefully better.

I drive a 2019 CX-5 GT and find the seats to be excellent. Are the 2021 model seats different from the 2019 seats ?

17-21 are the same seats. 22 is supposed to have improved seats. I had a 19 GT and now a 21 GTR. Seats are the same for both cars. They are ok but certainly not as comfortable as the seats in my 16 RDX. If you read through the forums, seat comfort is a common complaint about the current CX-5.

There's three types of seats: cloth, leatherette, and leather (non-ventilated leather for the carbon edition, which is not returning for 2022). I tried all three and found the cloth to be the softest of the bunch. I think the leather seats are comfortable, but not a fan of the leatherette - way too much lumbar built in. I could not get comfortable in them on two occasions. Good to thoroughly test these things out before dropping $25-$40K.

Agreed, take a very very long test drive before your purchase.
