In the past, with other vehicles, I've connected a trickle charger to the battery leads before disconnecting to change the battery. Will this work with the CX-5 to avoid any resets?

 

No! And that is not advisable as you posted how you did it?
The battery charger you should be using measures the battery state of charge not the electrical system.
