We have had this car for about a month now and the navigation always seemed to be AWOL so we just ran the one free update today. Simply stated, this thing does not know any addresses. We were only able to enter one address that it could digest prior to the update and now it doesn't even know that one. What an abbreviated map program this must be. I honestly hope that we are doing something wrong although it seems that most of the posters here, with a few exceptions, are having similar experience.

My wife is ready to drive the car into the river over this. We have a Garmin and it looks like we will have to continue to rely on it.

I hate that my first post about this great car has to be so negative.
I'll try to help you, rather than blame you. I'll assume you are in USA. Stop the vehicle. Click Navigate to an address to bring up the keyboard. Is the icon in the upper right a different state/country? I find that after starting the vehicle I then quickly start pressing buttons before the the nav unit is done booting it sometimes switches the country to Canada.

p.s. I've found the core function of getting to an address is excellent with this unit. Even using voice it finds the right place 98% of the time if I clearly pronounce the numbers and words. My only beef is with the "safety" device that has almost caused me an accident multiple times cause it forces you to maintain a speed when you need NAV most, in stop-and-go traffic.

Thanks for your offer to help. I will make sure it is booted in the future. I don't believe that has been the problem though as we can go through entering the state, city and street name and then it can almost never get the next step. Very frustrating. My wife stored an address (or at least a location) last night by being there and calling it a favorite. This is her car and she has had good luck with the voice commands.

I just can't believe Mazda puts such a lame Navigation System in their cars!!!!! Voice recognition sucks too. And you keep expecting Tom Tom to fix issues with their updates but they just bring new ones. Nice cars with horrible electronic interfaces and absurd "safety" features that makes driving 10 times more dangerous and they don't seem to have even tested them before release. I spent way too much time reading manuals and forums to realize that I need to buy a hand held unit (for 1/20 of the price I paid for this absurd thing).

I just can't believe that there are people (or is it just always the same guy) defending this horrible Navigation System. Do you guys work for TT? Or you have never used a GOOD GPS before? A hand held unit or a smartphone is WAY more useful than this SCAM, that is really the only way to call this. $2500 for this, REALLY?????? And YES, I read the manual for the Navi, the voice recognition and multiple Forums. But I never read the manual for a hand held Garmin unit and it works like a charm without this absurd "safety locks" or multiple voice selections (many that you have to pay extra!) that cannot even read street names, voice commands that do not recognize "drive to intersection". And finding a gas station in the hyway that is actually in your route and not 10 miles back, without having to stop in the highway an impossible challenge.

I've had my CX-5 for nearly a week. I find the TomTom not too bad when you navigate home. It tells me one route, but I use a parallel street to avoid traffic lights on one stretch, and it keeps updating the instructions to me to get back on its route. I do find it lacks a lot of Points of Interest, including our local Mazda dealership! When I ask to drive to Sams Club, it wanted to route me to one 42 km away instead of the local one! I do find the lack of common local points of interest somewhat perplexing, but it's quite accurate in pinpointing my position on the roads.

One thing I do hate is it asking to agree to some sort of long-winded disclaimer every time it starts up.

Just to let people know that Mazda is not reading these forums - at least that was confirmed by the Canadian Customer Support. So it is valid to rant about this p.o.s. unit, it is not getting you anywhere. Please contact and keep contacting Mazda about this. Your dealer should be kept in carbon copy of any conversations with Mazda so that they are aware (that is what I do at least). I also can only blame myself for not doing more research on this topic before I purchased the car. The only other option I have is to look for a replacement head unit which most likely will end up in divorce...

I spent many years in the White-Goods industry (Home laundry Dishwashing etc) and dealt with major manufacturers. Forums are a way of life and some of the manufacturers never looked at them at all. Probably frightened of what they might read, or of the opinion that it is traditionally only the moaners who bother to progress what they may think are petty issues.

In some cases lower to middle management may well have looked but were not allowed or able to action any issues.

Mazda TomTom live traffic is where my biggest issue was. Along with other customers I was particularly vociferous on various forums, Mazda UK I'm pleased to say did look at these forums and seemed to act accordingly.

I had a good dialogue with a leading member of their consumer relations team in the UK and he initially phoned me. I mentioned I had been active on some forums and he could actually tell me some of what I'd written.

So I would not be surprised if Mazda Canada are looking but keeping a low profile as would be against policy to comment on any forums they do not moderate.

No harm in keeping the flow through this medium, and reassures other users they are not alone.

Alex

Default Navigation

I had the navigation in a 2012 Nissan Juke which did not have voice so I can not compare to others with this option. My navigation for my 2014 CX-5 GT is working great. I'm able to do directions with voice while driving and have not had any issues. First I wished the screen size was larger but I'm getting used to it. Audio and phone system is also working very well.

A software update for TomTom navigation is now available for 2013-2014 CX-5, 2014-2015 Mazda6, 2013-2014 CX-9, 2013 Mazda3.

This update includes the major fixes described below, plus some additional minor concerns:
• Eliminated voice recognition cancelling when the vehicle speed exceeds 5km/h (about 4mph)
• Improved system stability
• Improved speech recognition
• Improved verbal and visual instructions for route guidance
• 3D view now includes more visual feedback (such as arrows indicating which lane to use in complicated highway interchanges)
• Improved GPS recovery after signal is lost, such as in tunnels, parking garages, etc.
• Improved commander control (if so equipped)
If you are experiencing any of the above concerns, you can update the navigation system yourself at this link choosing TomTom Home and the latest software version: What has changed in the updated software for my device?

If you have any questions, please call TomTom Customer Care at 866-486-6866 or visit your local Mazda dealer for assistance. To locate your nearest

Unhappy It's not a Garmin...

I have a Garmin unit I use in My Prius and the Tom Tom just doesn't match the quality. But then Garmin and Magellan have had a long time to get things right.
