Default Air out of dash vents when set to floor

Its cooling down in Minnesota and now that we are using heat I have noticed that air comes out of the dash vents even when the selector is set to floor only.

I would consider it normal for air to come out of the vents further up on the dash to blow as they are designed to blow on the side windows to keep them free of fog and frost, but it seems odd that the dash vents on the driver and passenger side blow as well.

A friend that has a 2015 said their vents dont blow air when the heat selector is set to floor only. I stopped by the dealer and checked one on the lot and it did the same thing. I wonder if there was a change for 2016, or if there is some sort of defect?

My contacts are drying to my eyeballs and its annoying to have to either point the vent the other way, or turn the vent off with the rotary ****. Anyone have any insight on this?

Well, my brand new cx5 just had to have the whole heat valve selector unit replaced, so maybe you have the same issue?

Thanks for the reply. What were the symptoms you were having that prompted them to replace the valve?

The only button that responded was air speed. No AC, no switching to windshield/floor, no recirc/fresh, cold air only...

Russell, I'm just seeing this thread, is this issue resolved? I have the same thing but not very much air blows out the floor vent even on high. Seems like the driver's side is worse than passenger.

No, the issue was never resolved.

I did go to the dealer and they started up a new one on the lot and it did the same thing. So either there is a whole batch that has the same problem, or that is the way it is supposed to be. Just living with it for now.

Default Not great

Mazda seems to have gotten sloppy here. Thinking for us instead of letting us decide where we want air or no air. My dealer said he'd never heard of this complaint. Duh . I'm thinking of taking tape and hanging a piece of black paper over a vent next time it bothers me. I guess if there aren't enough complaints then no after market nor Mazda will do any correction for us.

I just noticed this happening on my 2018 CX-5 (air coming from dash). I, too, am in Minnesota and it's getting colder. The air was blowing through the dash before the engine had warmed at all and climate control was set to AUTO. My understanding is that no air blows from any vents until the engine starts warming.
