22 cx-5
Recently had an oil change done, vehicle inspection according to the shop that did the oil change calls for a new battery. I've looked into this for a few days, and am curious if when replacing a battery in a 22 CX-5 it needs to be programmed to the vehicle? I was told this must be done jumped the price up 200 bucks from what I can find for a battery online looking at optima red top. Any input would be appreciated, Tia ✌️
Edit, skyactiv, carbon edition if this makes a difference?

I've never heard of having to program the battery to a car... but batteries starting to go bad after 2 years is not completely unheard of on these cars. Usually they last 2-5 years, with some longer outliers.
As for batteries prematurely going bad under 5 years and specifically in the 2-year mark is generally from the owner not doing basic watchful service of the charging system, load testing the battery at least once a year even if still under manufactures WARRANTY and buying low quality even in name brand batteries to "jut" barley make the CCA requirement of the OEM or electrical system.

You don't know the actual age of the battery or how it was treated while on the sales lot.
I would have your battery loaded test for free a few various shops and retail auto parts stores.
You can use a battery voltage back up if you are worried about losing a few amenities like your favorite radio stations. But there are no critical systems that need to be reset by a simple battery change.
Thanks for all the input, just curious.. as it was put to me this must be done so the battery does not overcharge 🤷 IDK it just seemed like a way to get money.. that being said I don't want to mess up this vehicle, however if I can buy one and put it in myself and save 200 bucks guess what's going to happen lol.

As I posted earlier info….and now add this
The Skyactiv ECU regulates the charging of the battery including AGM.
Thats all I currently use in all my vehicles is Optima which is an AGM.
Still not sure on the model Mazda mentioned by the OP where that info came from? Either it was misunderstood by the op likely) or the service mechanic working on his Mazda is not looking at the battery replacement information for that specific Mazda?
I say mechanic because an Automotive Technician can access the ECU and see charging rate voltage at load and no load very easily which would have answered the voltage to charge a battery question if thier was one?
I think really they are referring to setting the memory systems after a new battery is installed. But even the istop (if applicable) system only take a few minutes to perform and not a high technical difficulty. Even a DIY can perform the simple procedure.

I like the DIY please provide more information, as in if I was to replace the battery. What do I need to do to pair it to the ECU? What things are needed other than installing a new battery? I'm only about a week into this so I am absolutely willing to do whatever research is needed this just seems like a simpler solution.
Also yes, the owner of the shop quoted me 450.00 something for a new battery, claiming they needed to program it to the vehicle...
Going to a shop for a cheap oil change is one thing. When owner of the said shop texts you back and recommends a new battery. At twice the going price... I mean, I mean I get install fees and whatnot... But, 200+ 🤷

Battery tests are generally done by directly connecting to the battery.
Maybe the person(unknown level of experience) doing the battery test didn't know what a battery looked like under the hood? LOL
