2022 CX-5 NA CE / 2nd Gear Fixed Mode
I just passed 7500 miles on my 2022 Na Ce and it runs far smoother than when new - As well my learning curve with the skyactive awd transmission vs my 2010/ 3 -GT hb / and Speed 3 took some patience --- Indeed the skyactive is smooth and initally after getting some jumpy shifting , I found premium brand gas to solve the issue 95% namely Chevron - it is what it is - as I have a Costco membership and couid get gas a bit cheaper - but it was proving to cause the issue -Anyhow - the last " kink " in my search for anything out of whack was ...comming off the freeway after long distances after crusing above 65mph - I would encounter a stop and if I didnt completly stop there often would be a violent downshift from 2nd into first which , was definilly not good or sustainable - pp 4-66 - 2022 owners manual tipped it off - and confirmation from a Mazda tech / and friend - yielded the fix - I must come to a complete stop to get the trans locked into 1st gear and if I roll the stop , even 1mph - I get a lugging in 2nd then a radical shift to 1st - IF ITS at a near stop speed .......which its designed to do - It oulines the reason on page 4-66 " When the selector lever is moved + while the vehicle speed is about 10km/h (6.2mph) or less , the transaxle is set in the second gear fixed mode . The gear is fixed in second while in this mode for easier acceleration from a stop and driving on slippery roads such as snow covered roads " .....in reality , If I stop completley and release the brake with a tempered cadence. - It starts in1st gear properly - Tech said. thats the " way it is " - So the upshot - no more violent downshifts from 2-1 and unlikely to get a ticket running a stop sign - Anyone have another reccomendation or ecperience - as the 22 Trans shiftpoints / programming was set up differently than the exact same transmission of prior years -
I've had my 2021 CX-5 Turbo for 15 months and 20k miles now and I could write a book about all the little complaints that I have about it but the one thing that I have nothing but praise for is the behavior of the transmission, I can't imagine why Mazda would mess with something that works so well. The manual for the 2021 says the same thing about the "second gear fixed mode" but the way I read that is that it applies only if you use the paddle + control below 6.2 mph and nothing about it being applicable if you just leave it in full automatic mode.
I use an OBD2 wi-fi dongle together with the OBD Fusion iPhone app to monitor numerous parameters as I drive and have a numerical display as to what gear the transmission is in at all times. I have never encountered any shifting issues with this transmission. I find the downshifts as you are slowing to a stop to be both timely and smooth. I have read other compalints about the transmission in one or more of the online CX-5 forums; maybe I just got lucky and got a good one?

We still cant make a perfect circle , rim , tire etc. - The CX5 is thus far a well made car - with high quality materials and exceptional engineering - most problems occur after they arrive from Japan -
