Hello all!
I purchased my 2022 CX-5 SE in May. Around 2,500 mile or so it developed a surge when 2-3 shift occurs when cold. It only does this when its ambient temp of the outside air, or after sitting 8+ hours. Now that its colder outside (I live in western NY) It will do it for most of the time. Used to be only 1 time, now I have had it happen up to 4 times. Once the vehicle is up to operating temps, or above 100 degrees, it shift smooth as silk.
I let it ride out until her 5,000 mile first service. I took it to the dealer, and they reset the transmission control into relearn mode. This resolved it for about 900 miles or so, and it reared its ugly head again.
My dealer was backed up until after Thanksgiving, so I took it to another Mazda dealer in my area.
This dealer gave a whole ton of attitude! I explained the issue and what was occurring. To which he asked if the little blue cold temp indicator was lit, which as I had explained this happens when cold. Basically blowing me off that this was normal. I then explained I used to be an auto tech with lots of transmission experience, and this is not normal. With more pushed back I got - have you ever owned a Mazda before?
Now I'm pissed - I told him, you find me a 2022 CX-5 with around the same 5K on the clock, lets drive it from cold and if it shifts the same I'll believe you. He shut up. I put a call into the Mazda customer service as well, I cannot fathom that this a normal thing.
So all of you 2022 CX-5 owners, am I the @$$hole here and he's right? Do your CX-5's have a surge when shifting between 2-3 gear when cold?
Yes this is my first CX-5, and a search showed me no others complaining of this, so I cant believe this is normal as I would expect to have seen others talk about it.
*-UPDATE- *
Mazda dealer called me back and stated this is normal and they have other CX-5's they test drove and they displayed the same issue as well.
Thank you Sub for your response.
I hope if anyone else can reply here and let me know if they have this same issue on their CX-5 or not.
I'm not convinced this is "normal"
I am visiting family and I left the car outside last night, it's cold here (35 or so)- I paid attention and it did nothing unusual. At home it is still much warmer so I wanted to be sure for you.
I have that issue on my 2023 CX-5, frustrating, also when at 60 kmh and 1500 rpm, I'm getting a vibration. Our shop guys havent found an issue yet. This is also not normal
The MAZDA transmission as well the engine has a long break in period close to 15-20k miles. So naturally unless there is major sounds and function unlike what is described in the first post Mazda is going to say its normal!
Your Mazda is under WARRANTY and such if a multiple dealership states your transmission if fine it is now on record with your VIN having any and all Mazda deanship looking at the issue you "think" is a problem. Your **** is covered now under WARATY should something actually happen which at this point I doubt.
For those that are claiming to be an AutoTech I would get current certification so you don't read as behind in the times! LOL You are making some of us that are current and current for decades look bad!
Just for some basic understanding about a dealership... It is still a independently owned business and as such can deny any customer service! So attitude towards them can get you with them saying "Have a nice day" and send you on your way.
The contract with MAZDA and a MAZDA dealership does not state you must or are required to help all MAZDA vehicle owners!

Welcome to the forum
How can you say it is not normal when your Service shop has not found the cause yet? If you are experienced with the full operation of the Skyactiv Transmision and the TCM then why are you not telling the shop what the cause is? How did you fully determine it was the transmission? How about waiting until you or the service shop actually finds if there is a problem and the component that is the concern instead of second guessing even your shop at this early stage of diagnostics?
2023 CX-5 NA about 7500 miles. Yes, same issue, was told by dealership this was normal. Only happens when cold and only a couple of 2-3 shifts, then no issue. I have noticed that between 5000 and 7500 miles the surge and the hit into 3rd is getting milder, but it can easily happen for 4 or 5 times until warmed up. I have done the Callisto reprogram technique and also changed the fluid and filter (pan drop) at 5000. Not worried at this point. Tom
