Default 2020CX-5 moondroof not closing completely

Hi,

We have a 2020 CX-5, purchased CPO last year. The 12 month Mazda warranty expired in late June. About a week ago the moonroof stopped closing properly. If you push the button forward to close, it slides forward normally, but the rear edge of the glass panel does not raise properly. The (US) drivers side does not lift at all, the passengers side does lift. The front edge of the glass is aligned normally. We looked with a borescope, but we cannot see anything blocking the glass or rails. We removed the glass to watch the rails. From what we can the the passengers side behaves as normal, the rail slides forward, then the rear raises up. The drivers side slides forward, but does not raise. Looking from above there is a cutout in the rail for a tab to move up when the rear edge raises. That tab is not aligned with the cutout, the rail appears to move about 5mm too far forward.

Does anyone here have experience with this?
Can the travel of the glass carrying rails be adjusted? Mechanically or with dealer software?
Can the guide rails be adjusted forwards or backwards relative to the moonroof frame?

Ill try to upload some pics later today.

Thanks for any help!

Drivers side, tab is not passing through the plastic gap

Drivers side front of rails, gap is smaller than passengers side

Passengers side front of rails

Passengers side, tab is passing through gap.

Welcome to the forum.

I wish I had some advice but some things I have ZERO experience with. Maybe you posting pictures may give a little more thought about the problem? Otherwise unfortunately I can't really help and wish I had something better to post?
I looked in ALLData and the only service is for an R&R. No adjustments or any reference to programing? This translates into we would pass this customer to an auto body shop for serving.

Don't mess with it, bring it to an known experienced dealer/shop and let them deal with it. It might be something simple they can fix without replacing the whole thing . As i have said B4 ,sun roofs/ moon roofs may bite you in the A$$ .

Actually, very few dealerships are as experienced as independent body shops in this type of repair. And many dealerships contract with these body shops close to them for many auto body repairs! Whereas a body shop will often have much more experience with doors, hoods, sunroofs etc. Thats what many do day in and day out.

Sure, dealerships have body and paint bays, but most are for painting and "MINOR" body work! '

'and here we go again...

When we had a bad sunroof we would send it to the Sunroof Doctor in Phoenix. A shop that specializes in sunroofs can often be the fastest ,cheapest best solution. . I would find a shop that specializes in sun roofs .

I never want one, but it since it gets automatically included with the trims I want in vehicles I don't complain.

Ya i agree. Since 2018 when we bought our Mazda 3 I have opened it maybe a dozen times and that was to clean the tracks. I even tinted the glass and never open the cover while driving.

Appears to me that your driver's side tab is broken, and the passenger side has hairline cracks in it.
This can happen with debris or ice (or defective part?)

SHARP EYE, if the replacement parts are available separately instead of a whole new track assembly ,it ought to be a easy cheap fix.
