This is really disappointing. I blame myself for not test driving it long enough or at higher speeds before buying it. I assumed incorrectly that a Mazda, like my previous Mazda 3, would perform better. I have complained several times to the dealer and now to corporate about how the transmission isn’t shifting correctly and I’m told it’s functioning as designed. Well then it was designed wrong!

I worked as a Service Rep for another manufacturer for years and all I know is that the company won’t do much until they start getting a lot of complaints & the executives get involved. Not sure if Mazda is the same, but I suggest anyone bothered by this starts writing to the President, Tech Services and Customer Service. I shouldn’t have to trade-in my car I’ve had barely a year to solve the problem. Found this on the recall notice sent to dealers: Hideo Takashima - Director, Technical Services Division - Mazda North American Operations. Will find address and write there plus the others.

After the cylinder deactivation recall has been performed on our car, I noticed a significant drop in fuel efficiency (2-3 MPG) and really suspect that they disabled (or almost disabled full) cylinder deactivation altogether. If that can be proved, then I see a class-action lawsuit almost similar to the VW diesel scandal since the cylinder deactivation also claims improved MPG numbers for the customers and now it is most likely non-existent.

Or maybe you guys who are affected with this issue write to your State's Attorney General.

It seems their are two sides to this issue - those who want CD on for better fuel economy and those like me who want it off for better performance (why I bought a Mazda and not a Toyota, although guess I was wrong). Not sure why they didn’t see that coming and create a mode to turn it on and off like other cars have - “eco mode”, “eco boost” etc. You can deactivate stability control, radar braking and more, why not this with the disclaimer that fuel economy will go down when it’s off?
Yeah I’d love to upgrade to the turbo model, but can’t afford it right now and shouldn’t have to honestly. Had my Mazda 3 over 10 years and it was peppy & fun to drive up until the day I traded it in. After the recall update, it’s much better, but if it goes back to the jerkiness and hesitation like others said theirs did, might be time to say goodbye.

If you want to feel a seriously jerky transmission, try a 2016 RDX. The 6-sp in mine was simply horrible. I took it in several times asking for relief. It is a known issue and Acura recommends 30k transmission fluid changes which was a rolling change due to so many issues. The CX-5's tranny is like butter in comparison.
