I was washing my roof and I noticed that I was missing two of my screws for my Cross Bars that connect to my roof rack rails. I was relieved the car wash didn't grab and damage my rails and roof. Or fly off and hit a car behind me.
It doesn't seen like anyone sells OEM replacements. And I didn't find any posts here about it. So I purchased these shoulder eye bolts and they work perfectly. https://a.co/d/00A92nUw
They are M6 x 42 mm shoulder eye bolts and they are stainless steel painted black. The eye holes makes provides same ability to connect straps and makes it easy to adjust the bars when needed. And they aren't going to rust. And they can handle more weight (200lbs) than the racks can (165lbs).
I'm sure you are aware that stainless steel is not impervious to rust especially on roads where salt compounds are used during winter months.
But more important, galvanic corrosion occurs when using stainless steel and aluminum.
The stainless bolts you purchased are coated which will help, provided they are a chemical appropriate coating.
You can also use rubber, plastic or nylon washers.
Otherwise, the two metals can actually fuse together, appearing as if they were welded together.
Unless otherwise stated by the supplier of stainless steel they are not medical or Aircraft grade stainless steel and will have some iron in them.
SAE304 are the description you really want if you want maximum weather protecting.
And this is why as Lobstah stated many offered in their description stainless steel will often still rust or corrode.
Thanks. I'll put some nylon/rubber washers on them. And it does say it's 304. So what kind of metal was the factory bolts?
But I'm not as concerned about the fuseing. Just don't want rust getting on my car/paint. And I definitely don't want my cross bars flying off or getting ripped off in the car wash.
OEM bolts are aluminum on the Mazda CX-5.
Most every vehicle that has aluminum roof racks/rails also has aluminum bolts.
Aluminum bolts are plenty sturdy enough, 310 MPa (megapascal) or 45,000 psi.
The maximum weight capacity on the CX-5 roof rack is 165lbs (75kg).
