Unhappy Music/entertainment advice

Hi everyone, I am looking for help and how others are using the music system in their CX-30. I have the Pure model from 2020. I love to have my music going on while I drive but I find it frustrating how long it takes to get it going, if it all.
Firstly by default the radio does not come on when starting the car. Is this by design?
If I connect my phone to the car via USB or bluetooth it seems to find all the audio files to play, of which I do have a lot of MP3's on my phone. The problem is I also have a lot of voice recorded conversations which I certainly do not want to start playing (I do not want to listen to them or have others in the car hearing them).
I have tried a USB stick with MPs which seemed to work nicely the first few times where the car would automatically detect and play them since that was the source when I last drove but now I have to remove the USB stick, wait a few minutes and reinsert and hope it detects it. Then try again if it doesn't. That is a lot of mucking around and waiting just to get music happening.
Can I ask how other people have their entertainment set up because I am out of ideas of a simple, automatic, guaranteed option that works.
Cheers,
Darren.
