First off, thanks everyone for all the advice and help.
Not sure why my stupid was out more today than the rest, but it was. The timing belt was still good but had 30 yrs & 105k miles. So, I made 3 marks on the cam sprocket, and 3 marks in different color on the crank sprocket. I removed the belt and stretched it out on piece of wood (nail at 1 end and other end) and transferred the 2 marks onto the new belt. put the new belt back on and hand cranked it 2 revolutions. Or at least I thought. The marks did not line up I thought, so I pulled off the belt......stupid. SOOO now, the cam was off from the crank.
How can I get the cam and crank back in sync to put the belt back on properly? or am I FOOBAR?
BJ
You can turn the engine several more times if you'd like.....just verify that the timing is still aligned properly by stopping at TDC and ensuring that both the cam gear and the crank gear both are aligned to their timing markers, as they were when you installed the timing belt.
Keep in mind that the crank gear turns 2 revolutions to the ONE revolution of the cam gear.......so you need to turn the engine crankshaft over twice to have TDC on both the cam & crank again. In other words......if you turned the crankshaft over THREE full revolutions, the camshaft gear would NOT be at TDC (12:00 o'clock position).......the "1" mark on the cam gear would be at the 6:00 o'clock position......you would have to turn the crankshaft one more revolution to get the cam gear "1" mark back to the 12:00 o'clock position again.
