Mazda BT 50 & Pickup TrucksWhile Mazda may not be known for their trucks, they have always produced quality reliable trucks for both hauling cargo, or simply crusing. BT 50
just recently started ....1987 b2200 2.2 5 speed... high idle will not come down even after warm up... no visable signs of vac leaks but do see a couple going into air cleaner area plugged with golf tee... not sure how long like this .. never really noticed and i have had truck for years ha... carb spray does not indicate any leaks... i am not with truck now but trying to figure out what to do when i see it... ( at my NC cabin ) is there a electric choke on this thing or not... what does it look like and how would i diagnose ? thansk
There should be an electric choke on the STOCK Mazda carburetor.......in the picture below, the electric choke "heater" is the large black in the top center of the picture...
There is a wire attached to it and it should run down, and plug into, the rear of the STOCK alternator.
You can see the wire in the pic below.....
These pictures are of a new replacement carb that I bought nearly 20 years ago for one of my past trucks that I owned......
Looks like you can still buy a stock replacement carb.......for about $470.00.......most of us will buy a Weber carb instead, unless your area has emission testing, like all of California does
thank u thank u... i have never noticed that black choke, but i do have a stock carb, and the idle used to reduced when warmed up and i stepped on then off gas... will check out next time i see truck... is there anywhere i could buy just that choke assy ?
I'm not sure where to locate just a choke heater, but I would think that you could. First I would get some carb cleaner and spray down/clean all of the carb linkage......sounds like you have some of it just sticking and therefore not allowing it to rotate once the choke flap fully opens.
figured this out back in May and just now thought I should share... others I am sure will or have seen this... high idle was result of my alternator failing... always keep truck on tender and being carb with no electronics it would run fine for days without charging..then.. after running maybe too many days the turn signal icons on dash.began to dim and that's when I knew something was up... tested charging and it was not happening... new alternator changed out with choke plugged into back of it and..... happy happy happy... back in business and idle will kick down when heated up as it should... crazy how I never thought of this and crazy how long these older vehicles will run on battery only !!!
