Default Timing is off

Hi:

I took my '93 323 in for a Calif. smog check. The verdict was the RPM was out of range to verify timing. "will not stabilize in acceptable range".

the timing light won't shine on the harmonic balance so I can't see where the mark is to rotate the distributor. It might work with a small light &/or a small mirror to see under the power steering belt, how is that done?

If it's not designed to be adjusted, does the computer alone manage the advance? I'd replaced the fried computer with a used one.

Thanks

First find the timing marks and put a dab of white paint on them, both on the harmonic balancer and n the indicator.
Then do everything that is needed to fix a "rough idle": check for vacuum leaks, clean the TB, the MAF sensor, and the IAC, clean the EGR, replace the ignition parts: plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
The computer will attempt to smooth the idle but it won't be able to if the spark is weak, the airflow misread and the idle air control is dirty.

Default how many degrees before tdc?

Hi Tanprotoge: thanks for your knowledge. You should be on Mazdas payroll.

The ignition timing mark in Chiltons is supposed to be "within 1° BTDC of the specified degree" but they don't tell you what it is. It might be there (within 150 pages) but I won't bet on it. So please tell me; is it

at 2°
(re. http://www.mazdabg.com/ftp-uploads/M...DA32316iB6.pdf)

or 12°
(re. Setting Mazda 323 Ignition Timing)?

or something else

WAIT-WAIT! I found it (7° BTDC) it was about 15 deg too advanced

Bill
