Default to much air?

hello, all im new on the mazda site but not with this dam car of mine just resently after shortin the exhaust from the rear to the side in front of the right rear tire it started to backfire after going into corners and then would just shoot back fires for a few seconds then act like its not getting enough fuel and running like on one cylinder and i had the gas pedal to the floor and it didnt respond and then it did after about 15-20seconds, we are thinking its getting to much air, also the bottom of the air cleaner box is gone but that was off for almost a year, its an 86 626 2l,the exhaust still connected to the haeder, cat, pre muffler then bends out the side, maybe to much back pressure is a thought to? thanks for your input in advanced

Pull the fuel pump out and check the tank for contamination. It's easy access to the pump by removing the rear seat bottom. 5 minute job. Check for water etc. Sounds more like a fuel contamination problem. Also check the rubber boot from the aircleaner box to throttlebody for cracks.

86 626 is easy from the top. No bolts involved. Maybe 10 phillips screws.

That's what's the problem with my Mazda 323f '91, **** in the tank. It worked fine when I cleaned the tank but I got new **** in there pretty fast. It was the fuel pipe that was rusty so whenever I put in new fuel pieces of the pipe got into the tank

well we put the bottom part of the air box and filter back on it and seemed to run fime but when i went back to the track to race it ran fine then went crappy again but the last thing that was done to the car was the exhuast the track told me since my stock exhaust/muffler was hollowed out and old that we could straight pipe it out the side of the car in front of the right rear tire and thats when we noticed thats when the car started to act up and backfire like a shot gun,so we going to put the stock length of exhaust pipe back on and go from there
