Well Matt, it sounds like one way or another you are going to have to remove an interior door panel to see whats going on in there. If the handle has little or no resistance it could just be that the linkage came undone and needs to be clipped back into place. Or what the link attaches to may be broken due to a lack of lubrication and force over the years, but you"ll just have to see for yourself. There"s no other way I know of.

Mazda dealerships will replace broken door handles for free. There was a recall campaign on the door handles breaking that covered several years models. Contact your local Mazda dealership service department and tell them you have broken door handles on your 626. Ask them if they will still honor the recall.

If the dealership won't do the repair because it was so long ago, you do have another option. The driver and passenger handles are interchangeable. Only one side of the handle is used to connect to a rod. The piece on the handle that connects to the rod breaks. You can swap handles and connect the rod to the other side of the handle that's still good. If you take the doors apart you will see how it all works.
