Exclamation Check ekgine light on, need help!

Hi all my GF has a 2000 626 and the check engine light came on a while back and with it it also started leaking oil. We took it to auto zone and they said it was the egr valve or unit. She had it replaced by a friend of a friend ( toyota mechanic ) and about a week later the light came on again and it never stopped leaking oil. Does anyone have any idears on what this might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles on the car? Can you describe where on the engine the oil is coming from? Pull the PCV off and shake it; if it rattles it's OK, otherwise replace it.
Leaking oil is not directly related to the EGR, but if the engine is blowing oil around and it's getting into the intake or exhaust, it can result in fouling of the EGR bigtime.
What's your exhaust smoke like (clear, black, blue, white )?
How much oil does your engine normally use? Have you noticed a sudden jump in oil consumption?

EGR gives problems too, but sometimes it's also because its ports get plugged really solid and you have to soak the plumbing with carb. cleaner and sort of ream the crud out of the EGR ports.

Hi oldeng, well she has 112,000 on her car and I haven't looked at the pcv valve at all. As far as I know no smoke is comming from the tailpipe and she says the oil comsumption varies but recently half a quart in about 2000 miles. I have been under there recently to change her right side cv axle and noticed oil EVERYWHERE. I tried tightenting the valve covers and oil pan bolts and it seems that it isn't leaking as bad but still does.

Gee; perhaps now's the time to do an "engine valet job", with the engine warm, but not hot, spray or brush it down with dunk/ gunk, hose it off, let the thing dry, then park it over some newspapers. Alternatively, you could go to a steam cleaning service.
Once you've gotten rid of the old oil and the engine is clean, see if that way you can pinpoint the location of the leak. As described, it could be anything from a gasket, an oil seal, or even a rotted through oil pan.
This is guessing on my part, I don't know the location of the rear O2 sensors on your car, but if they're low down, that oil could have infiltrated into the connector(s). Since the O2 sensor signal is only about 0.5 Volts, it doesn't take much by way of bad contact to give an apparent out of limit signal which would explain the CEL on.
So I guess it's go fro the oil leak first, then deal with the CEL issue.
