Mazda used what are called breakaway bolts for the ignition lock cylinder and can be a real bugger to remove. You will need to have a #2 phillips screwdriver with at least a 4" blade to get the column covers off. After that the best option is a sharp chisel and a hammer to get the breakaway bolts out.
Have a better thought that may work better though Claude. If you have the VIN number for the car I may be able to get the key code for it that will enable your local Mazda dealer to cut a new key to use in the ignition so that we do not need to go thru all of this trouble. You can check with your local dealer to see if they will run a 'vehicle status inquiry' that will contain the key code or give me a post back with the 17 digit VIN and I will check for you to see if the key code has been registered. This will only work if it is the OE ignition switch and has not been replaced already.

No such luck on an available key code. Key code portion gives only zeros which means it was not reported. Still a slight possibility that the selling dealer may have made note of the key code. I know we always do. Original selling dealer was Neil Huffman Mazda in Louisville, KY. Phone is 502-448-6666 and was retailed on 7/31/1987.
If they do not have the code then will probably have to resort to the hammer and chisel method to get the two breakaway bolts out to free the steering lock. Have also used a dremmel to cut a slot in the bolt head to enable a flat screwdriver to remove but usually does not work due to the lack of reasonable access and tightness of the bolts. Good luck.
