Default 94 626 engine problem

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and I hope that one of you folks can help me with a problem that I am having with my son's 1994 626 with a 2.0 L four cylinder, automatic trans car. The engine starts fine but hesitates when I give it gas, kind of lags then will rev up in rpms but not real smoothly. I checked the codes and it is indicating that the Throttle Position sensor may be at fault. I am having a hard time checking the sensor, so far I have checked the reference voltage and it is spot on at 5 volts, however when I check the operation of the sensor it appears to be backwards in operation to what my Haynes manual indicates it should be. At idle when the throttle plate is closed the book says that I shouldget a voltage reading of .5 to 1.0 volts, I am geting 4.75 volts. As I open thethrottle the voltage goes down progessively to .75 volts. The manual says I should bereadingfrom 3.5 to 5 volts at wide open throttle. My readings are all with a negative sign on the digital volt meter, but they are in the .5 to 5.0 volt range but just reversed from what they are supposed to be. I don't know it the negitive sign indicates a errorin operation of the meter or if the sensor is causing it (the Reference voltage check is not negative) The range is correct but just backwards.I have called the Mazda shop and talked to the service manager but he was no help.
