Bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter (it is the black cylinder on the drivers side firewall), clogged or bad fuel injectors.BJ

Does kind of sound like a fuel related problem. Could also be a faulty circuit opening relay or grounding switch in the Air Flow Sensor. Back by the brake master cylinder and wiper motor, look to see if you can locate a yellow colored two pin connector with Black wire and Blue w/ Green stripe wire. It should not be plugged into anything but just lying there. Use a jumper wire or even a paper clip to jumper those two wires together and see if the engine will continue to run.

Well, I guess the first part is good news anyway that now we know that either the pump relay closing switch in the air flow meter is either not closing or the air flow meter door is not opening up as it should. By lifting the air cleaner housing top and manually opening the air flow door, you should be able to isolate it from one to the other.
Sorry to hear that the headgasket was blown after all.[:@]
Is one of the easier cylinder head to R and R if that is any consolation.
