90 626 quit running
Hello all I am new to this forum and have read through trying to find something like my problem but haven't found it exactly so I am going to post. Just purchased a used 626 about four months ago. I am very happy with the first mazda I have ever owned and the first problem I have had with it left me stranded over christmas weekend in Indiana. Not so much stranded just didn't trust her enough to drive it three hours on a rainy night. I was driving fine and let off the accelerator to come into a town and the car kicked a few times and died pretty quickly. I cranked it over five times before it started up but each time I cranked it, it wanted to start well it finally did and I drove it the rest of the way to the destination and it only acted up one more time and that was when I let up on the throttle again going down a hill, I don't know if letting up on throttle is related or not. I was thinking fuel pump when it first happened but after reading a few post that doesn't seem to be too common. If it is the fuel pump is it hard to change? can I do it without removing the tank?
thanks

may want to check the throttle position sensor first as it is easier to change(and cheaper) once that is ruled out you may want to look at your fuel filter and then your fuel pump relay. after those checks then look into a fuel pump. being an older car I'd guess that the pump is outside the tank but not sure on that one.

since it is intermittant I thought that it may be a hard problem to track down. could the throttle position sensor cause it to shut down? I just assumed the pump was in the tank and it sounds like it may be able to be changed without pulling the tank don't know that for sure because the car is still in indiana.

RE: 90 626 quit running
I had an 88 chevy that when I let off the throttle when going uphill died. also had a hard time restarting till it cooled down a bit. it only happened twice and the second time I took it to the dealer and they traced it to the TPS. after replacing it, never happened again. not saying that is what it is, but you may want to check it out first before exploring other more expensive options.
