Default 89 323 engine troubles??

I am in need of advice. Recently my 1.6L 323 had a severe overheat, engine died, but after fixing the problem it restarted and got me home. Now when you start it, it is sluggish, you can't whomp on the gas, it sounds like it bogs down and then sounds like it is "backfiring" through the air flow box. If you slowly, and I mean slowly give it gas it will tach out. All fluid levels are good. plugs and wires good. air filter clean, no damaged, at least i don't see any, damaged hoses or lines. any clues or advice. I will take what you can give. Thanks!!

The first place I would start is a compression check. This will help determine if there is any engine damage due to the overheat.
