Talking 323 ice racer build "vectorhorse"

I just joined this forum because I’m building a Mazda 323 ice racer...using this...

I’ll post photos of the build as I go. Can’t wait to start!

But for now…I have a few questions.

Anyone know what other model of car with a 14inch rim will fit on a 1990 DX 323? I have a bunch of cut tires for ice racing off my Celica I’d like to put on the 323.

Also, I want to swap my 1.8L SOHC for something with more horsepower! What options do I have with the least amount of headache? Is it true that Ford Escort engines will fit? If so, what production years and what engine sizes (engine displacement/liter) will fit?

Does anyone know of know any wings that’ll fit from other models on a 323? I don’t think the stock 323 wings do much but if anyone knows of any specialty stock wings for the 323 are out there please let me know.

Thanks!

*Honda and Miata are both 4x100 bolt pattern. So 14" wheels off those models will work for you. Some of the Miata 14" wheels are also very light aluminum ones so you get a double bonus.

*Your best bang for the buck cheap power adder engine is the V6 2.5L from the Mazda 626/MX-6/Ford Probe. You will need a few parts from a V6 MX-3 to make it work (engine mounts, lower control arms), but it's a bolt-on affair. Club Protege has a ton of V6 swapped 323s, pay it a visit and do some reading.

*The Euro/Japanese upper/lower spoilers in the back should suit you fine since they were used on the rally cars.

Here is an example of the euro wings:

Thanks Dan for the reply. A few kilometers behind my house there is a Honda graveyard....its quite the sight! Maybe I'll start there.

That V6 engine swap is madness. Thanks for the pictures. Unfortunately the ice racing club would tack on some penalties for racing a V6 in an all 4-cylinder class. Plus it would not be that fun winning all the time...believe it or not.

I'm still wondering what Ford Escort engines will fit into a 323...if they even do. Someone at a local garage said they should work. That's all I've been going by.

Knowing what 4-cylinder engine will fit would be an immense help. It would mean I can start slowly looking for a powerplant while I work on the sprint car...the main project.

Once again I'm looking for a 4-cylinder engine that will fit in a 323 with the fewest modifications while still gaining considerable more horsepower. Also knowing if a turbo can be added would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Then the BP 1.8 DOHC will probably do you good. Or if you have some cash to spend, the BPT (turbo) from the GTX or GTR. Try www.clubprotege.com (the BG worklogs section, and the BP and BPT swap threads) for all the info you can shake an icicle at.
