2002 626 Starts then stalls out

2002 626 Starts then stalls out
I have a friend who starts his 2002 626, it runs for a few seconds then stalls.
I told him it sounds like a fuel pump but before he replaces that to check fuel pressure. would the pressure regulator also cause this type of symptom?
he did replace his fuel filter but no change so I told him not to throw parts at the thing and diagnose first.
Also, does the fuel pump have a filter inside the tank and is the external fuel filter the only one in line?
any other suggestions ?
