Default 2001 626 AT Transmission Issue, 4 cyl eng

Hey all!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and help if you can.

I just bought a used 2001 626 with AT Tranny and 4cyl eng about a month ago and it was doing fine until yesterday at a stop light when I pressed the accelerator to go, it acted like it was in nuetral for a second then final "popped" into gear and took off. I paid it little attention thinking it was probably no big deal since it didn't again...

Until today, it stopped shifting down anymore at all. When I come to a stop light, I feel no downshifting at all, and then when trying to move forward it revs but goes EXTREMELY slow, and then when it finally starts to pick up speed (around 5-10 mph) it acts seemingly normal, shifting up each gear as its supposed to...only to then again not shift down at the next stop, and so on.

I just parked it in the driveway, reverse works fine. The fluid level is normal, and is clean. I already read in here to replace the filter helps, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue and what it was.

Thanks!

It is the trans. The Ford CD4E trans that Mazda put in the 626 is a piece of junk. I would not recommend buying a used one, as you would be taking a huge gamble on getting something actually good. Find a reputable Trans shop in your area & have them look at it & quote you on a rebuild. I would also recommend having an external trans cooler installed bypassing the radiator.

I concur with the previous post.....
My 2000 626 needed to be rebuilt at 127k miles.
I had it done by the best shop in Mass. and was lucky enough to pay what the shop pays.
In other words, for anyone else he would have marked it up. And that price with a 2 year 36k mile warranty was $1700.00. I have heard of people paying up to $3k to get one rebuilt, especially at a dealer.....

Good Luck,
Mark

I just had mine rebuilt. Cost me $1285. I asked the manager at the transmission shop about the cooler, and he told me I shouldn't need one. But, Im gonna put one on it as soon as I can. What about putting synthetic oil in the Trans?

Quick follow-up question, how many years use this same transmission?
Say for instance, could I use a auto-transmission out of a 1990-something 626?

Thanks!
