Turned the key with the car running....
O.K...probably a stupid question but I took my 07 Mazda3 4-door STR to the dealer today for an 18,000 mile service. When I got to my car I didn't hear or feel the engine running and turned the key to start it but alas the car was running. I heard that lovely screech but was wondering how much damage I may have done as this was my first time?

If you released the key quickly, as soon as you realized it was running, probably negligible.
What is a Mazda3 STR specifically? A trim level? A special model available everywhere but here?

Yeah I did....I've kept the car immaculate since I bought it. Always garaged, all maintenance kept on schedule, mostly freeway miles, etc...I hated hearing that sound and was just concerned that my starter or flywheel may have been damaged. It starts fine without a sound. At least it runs so quietly that I can't even hear the engine running. Thanks for you input!
STR = S Touring trim....
Car has been awesome so far...moved from Seattle to Phoenix recently and averaged 30mpg on the trip. Speed limits down here are 75 on the Interstate but in 65-55mph zones I'm getting around 33mph so can't complain.

Ah, I see now. You really had me going w/the STR thing.
The flywheel and engagement gear can take a little abuse w/o cause for concern. If the engagement gear is not hanging up (a worst case scenario,) and you do not hear a screeching, scratching, whining sound when you start the car, you're OK.
