timing marks?

Default timing marks?

ok guys setting the timing on my mx3 1993,1.8 and according to the book (chiltons)it shows 1 little tit sticking out on each head,well mine r kinda marred up and it looks like there r 3 **** on each side,first off does somebody have a better picture than chiltons to line it up? and secondly is there another way to insure that the cams are where they r suppose to be? thnx

Will post a couple from factory manual. Has been a while since have replaced belt on this engine so can't recall if there is another way to ensure line up. I think the alinment pegs on the cam should be pointing straight up in relation to each head but not sure. As for your other post about backing up and all. Think that is just trying to make easier to get lined up. Main thing is to have cams and crank lined up before pulling pin on tensioner. If there is no belt slack anywhere except the section where tensioner is and all marks are on then go ahead and release tensioner. Rotating a few times just a double check. Was your tensioner ok? If after first removed you are able to depress that little piston with anything other than a vise and even that is hard, it is collapsed and will give you big problems in the future.

thnx babyhuey,i never heard of the alignment peg part so ill look in the morning,and will take ur advice on the other..i ended up buying a new tensioner anyway just to be safe and then i bought a motor cause i got it cheap,that had a nearly new belt and tensioner on it(and thats for sale now in the ads) but u live and learn i guess my wife loves this car so im going to do my best to keep it going for her.thnx again troy

Next time you do the belt, use a paint pen and mark the old belt in relation to the pulleys and then transfer the mark to the new belt. As long as the old belt was aligned right the marks will make setting up the new belt a billion times easier. Keep up on the upkeep of your MX3. The V6 seems to be a rare bird anymore but they are a blast to drive. Keep in touch. Doug.
