I developed a major coolant leak as I was about 30 yards from my garage. I did not know this until I got out of the car and saw the coolent trail as I pulled into the garage. The engine was running great up into the garage so I it had no sign of a problem. The coolent is leaking out of an opening at the back bottom of the bell housing. All of the coolant drained out of the radiator. When I poured water into the overflow tank, it immediately flows fast out of the opening. Could this be a frost plug failure. Any other iideas? See picture with the arrow pointing to the opening. What is this opening for?

 

Could be a leaking head gasket?


No, seriously, have you checked above & around the bell housing for any leaks that may be entering the bell housing?

I don't know if the rotary engine has frost plugs.
