Mazda Forum and Suggestion center is for forum questions (how to operate within the site) and suggestions to improve the site.
Common mistake. I will move to a more appropriate place.

It sounds to me like an ECU issue, but I am not aware of an '01 with an immobilizer system?
Another common prolem with P's is the intake hose, from the filter box to the throttle body. Take it off and make sure there are no cracks in it letting in air where it shouldn't be let in. This causes a false reading to the MAF sensor and makes the car run MUCH too lean, sometimes too lean to even start.
