Default Mazda 3 power steering noise

2004 Mazda 3 Maxx has a noise (grinding/crunching) coming from left hand side of the car which occurs when the steering wheel is turned either left or right. Can not feel any abnormality when holding any of the steering parts under the carwhenthe steering is being operated. Could this be either a loose belt or pump problem.
Cheers

Sounds more like a CV joint than anything else.

Hi, does the noise happen when the car is stationary or moving?
If stationary, open bonnet, and locate the shock absorber/coil spring top mount then touch the area whilst someone else operates the steering to replicate the noise. You may be able to 'feel' the noise this way. These Mazda's were prone to have noisy top shock absorber mounts/bearings that groaned or became notchy when turning.
There are genuine modified parts available at your local Mazda Dealer.
Hope this helps!
