Go to Autozone and have the codes pulled. Check pending codes also.

I just put money down on a '97 626 w/4 cyl and plan to pick it up on Saturday (9/8/07). On the test drive the car would surge big time upon acceleration; my Daughter was with me and she thought I was bouncing the gas pedal up and down. It seemed fine up to about 25 MPH, but after that it was real jumpy (seemed like I was playing with the gas pedal). At one point I held it to the floor and it seemed to be holding back... I could only get up to ~67 MPH on a fairly decent stretch of road.

The dealer had a code scanner (cheap one) and car had a code of 'Lean Bank 1' and something about 'Warmup Catalyst too low'.

The surging seems similar to your problem. Please post the solution once you get it figured out. I will post my solution once I get it resolved.

Thanks,
Kevin Thom.

Well, I figured mine out... might be same problem on yours.

First I put a new Bank 1 Oxygen sensor in (universal @ $65, but had tosolder wires). No help, but good to replace it anyways at 108K miles.

Decided to take a look at MAF. Didn't see the little sensors at first, but decided to take off toppart (black plastic enclosed squarish electronics part that connector plugs into); two special (torque w/center post) screws were tough to remove, but used needle nose pliers to twist them out. Sure enough, I found two little sensor wires when I pulled it apart. Couldn't hardly see them, but one looked gooked up. Used some very old freon TF solvent I have to spray the sensors & worked good (parts stores sell something too). Put it back together and now it runs fantastic... Zoom, Zoom.

Kevin.
