Default how to vent a plugged transmission vent

I have a 89 Mazda MPV 6-cyl, 2WD w automatic trans. I'm getting some smoke out of the transmission vent area and the tube where you add trans fluid. I also get a recurring transmission slip that comes in pulses around 45 mph. I know I need a oxygen sensor and have ordered it, awaiting it's arrival now. I'm hoping that will help with the tranny slip, but I doubt that. (any comments here).
My big question here though is how to vent a plugged transmission vent that they say in the manual will cause built up pressure in transmission problems like oil leaks etc. But the manual doesn't tell you how to vent a plugged vent. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
