Default Battery holder J-bar replacement?

Hello and my first Protege tech-DIY question
Hi all, proud owner of a new-to-me 1999 Mazda Protege 4-door with MT.

So I'm going over it and getting it ready for it's Maryland safety inspection and one thing I've noticed is the J-bar for the inboard side of the battery hold-down is missing. At least I assume it's a J-bar that goes there. It looks like there's some kind of thing for a J-bar to attach to at the bottom, on the tray, and the usual hole in the top of tie down.

The battery is perfectly fine for normal use, it's just something the inspectors always look at.

Any suggestions? TIA
j

Your local auto parts store should have a universal "j" bar/battery hold down kit. Visit them and ask.

And BTW: Welcome to the site, and the club!!
I'm not a football fan so I have to ask, what IS an office linebacker anyway??

Hey, thanks, that did the trick. There was a hold down kit with the crossmember, and they even had a cheaper kit with just two J-bars for like $4.
As far as my user name, please see:

P.S. Next up is my manual tranny fluid, if you have any tips on that, please reply!

That's a wild vid. Even as a non-football fan I can see the humor in it... or may be because?

Anyway yes, Royal Purple 75-90MT. You will need 3 quarts and it won't be cheap ($45-$60,) but you will likely only have to do it once. Ah, the beauty of the manual transmission.

Glad you liked it. I think football fans like it just as much.

OK so I got under my car today and I see what looks like the fill plug (23 mm nut? Who makes a 23 mm nut? Or is it SAE and it just falls between 22 and 24?) and what I also think is the drain plug. There's another smaller plug next to the fill plug which I thought might be the check plug--you know for MTs and diffs you generally fill to where fluid leaks out of the fill hole. But I thought maybe this smaller plug is where you loosen it to see if fluid comes out. Maybe that's dumb.

Anyway I undid it and not only did nothing come up, it looks like someone sealed it up with grey silicone stuff.

man it's crazy all the messed up stupid stuff/mistakes that have been made on my car by previous people doing mechanical work. I won't even call them mechanics.

Where would I find more detailed info about the MT drain/refill procedure?
