Cool !999 engine failure question

Hello,
Looking to buy a '99 miata and saw some disturbing post about engine failure due to Thrust bearing failure on the '99's. My question is: if a 99 miata has 177,000 miles on it, I would think if it was going to fail because of the defect from the manufacturer, it would have failed by now. Or it would be a good possibility that it would be okay?
