That should be your mark.
Here's what I usually do when in doubt.
Take out the #1 spark plug and put a long screwdriver/straightened coat hanger/whatever's long and straight down the hole.
Slowly, and carefully rotate the crank (don't force it if it binds or gets hard)
Watch for the screwdriver to top out and start going back down.
It's fail safe.
You can pull all of the plugs to make turning the crank easier.
