The good news for us consumers is that nothing could be further from the truth.

Larry,
Thanks for your helpful post. Changing the oil on this car is a bit more complicated than usual, and you saved us a lot of time! We had to go to two different stores to get the oil and the filter, and then back again after reading your post to get the 8mm allen wrench, so it still took longer than it would normally. But I am really glad I checked here when we couldn't locate the filter on the car because otherwise we may have tried to remove the entire panel underneath.
Cheers!

Thanks for the write-up! I am a brand new 2013 3 i GT owner and was curious on how to change the oil on this car. What's interesting is if I recall correctly, the Fram part # you mentioned is I believe the same as the one I used on my Infiniti G35 (I'll have to double-check). If so, I can list the other company's part #'s as I used K&N and Purator when I had my G.

Update
I have found another filter part number which I purchased from a NAPA Auto Parts dealer. It is a ProSelect Filter, part #21365 and cost under $5. It looks identical to the Fram PH6607 and the Mazda PE01-14-302 except for the color (white). Possibly by now, the major filter manufacturers have a cross reference for this filter or the Fram filter, and the choices are now greater. With a little over 16,000 miles on my Mazda 3, it has never missed a beat. Great car! /Larry

Mazda rec. to change the oil every 7500. There is no need to wait a brake in period for the motor due to it has been extensively broken in on a rack before installed in the vehicle. It's not rec to go much more then 7500 miles between oil changes due to breakdown of the oil and it startes to loose its lubricating properties. As for the oil filter u can have the parts store look up an rx-8 2004-10 and that filter also fits. Changing your own oil has no effect on your warranty as long as u keep records. A oil filter receipt will do. Also note that the trans oil is different in the sky active mazda 3 also. It is blue now and is not interchangeable with conventional ATF or multi use mercon 5. I'm a 10 yr master tech for mazda.

Thanks for your great write up. I know it saved me hours by having the right tools, oil and filter available before I started the job. The only thing I would add is that I had to take the filter off first to allow plenty of access to the drain plug using an allen wrench socket. Also I waited until the recommended 7500 for the first change.
Thanks
