Default 1995 mx3 starting issue

My friend has a 95 MX3 4 cylinder, stick.

It was working fine, then one day he got gas and the next morning it wouldn't start.

He changed the fuel pump and fuel filter....still no luck
then he found that the distributor was getting power in but not out. So he replaced the whole distributor and still no luck.

i personally haven't worked on it. this was what he has told me.

he hasn't checked for spark yet with the new distributor, but lets say he is getting spark.

what could be the issue?

lets say he isn't getting spark.
what could be the issue?

I was thinking ECU.

Any thoughts, any help would be greatly apprecaited.

It should have a code in the ECU. There is a little black box under the hood. Pop the cap on it and jump GRD terminal and TEN terminal. Turn the key on and count the check engine light flash's. 1 long flash = 10, 1 short flash = 1.

He tried the check engine trick and didn't get any lights. When he explained it, it sounded like he did it right.

He installed the new distributor and still has the same problem.

Here's my question, Their are two wire harness's coming off the distributor. Is there a way to test them and see if they are working correctly?

He can pull a plug wire and put an old plug on it to check for spark, To check for injection he can get a cheap noid light to stick on an injector connector. It will flash if the ECU is firing it. We need to know if it has fuel pressure regardless of whether he replaced the pump or not. He can spray some flammable brake cleaner into the intake and if it starts it tells us it is a fuel problem and not an ignition problem.
I have had bad fuel pressure regulators fry new fuel pumps. He should check the wiring at the pump connector for signs of overheating. Replace the fuel pressure regulator if so. He needs to do some more testing but it is unlikely to be the ECU. I need more info before i could hazard a guess at this point.
