The GPS was for reference that you can look at your speedometer and then your GPS to see the accuracy of your speedometer.
Many newer vehicles do use GPS for primary speedometer readings of your speed unless no signal then common input from sensors.
Technology is here ...
Just drove a 2026 Ford Expedition for over 1200 miles 4 day trip full digital dash and 2 heads up display. The speedometer was GPS and ECU registered. When you set cruise control it receives data from the GPS and the wheel and transmission sensors to make the hyper accurate speed registered on the speedometer. When there is no GOPS then onboard sensors do the work like most all Mazda currently from 2023 and older. I do not know about the 2026 models? . FYI some makes and model hold the speed information in a file in the ECU that can be retrieved like highest MPH and average MPH.

 

I will attempt to steer this thread back to the main reason this thread was started which was more for the interest and to make aware members and visitors aware of possible new laws that may be coming to your state if you are a US resident.

This is not a subject that I have any experience only reading the news one morning and it popped up about the 1 mile citing drivers. I laughed at first about that but reading it and seeing that it was fact based I thought I would start the thread on the subject. No other Mazda forum has yet but I am sure we will other forums post something as well?
To further the interest information that seems to have more attention than a single news report for the 2 states mentioned in post 1, a casual internet search reveals a lot more detailed information about this subject of speeding no matter what the degree over the posted speed limits. Here is one that I found that tends to support many of the responses so far. There are dozens more. In fact, contacting your local State Trooper, CHP or local police I am sure will state the same thing?
