Default New here... need Mazda tech help.

Hello all... A new poster here,
I'm fabricating a custom 3-wheeled project vehicle using parts from a 1991 Mercury Capri. It has the 1600cc dual overhead cam (non-turbo) engine that was made by Mazda for Ford. I understand it was also in the Mazda 323s and I believe the Miata (back then).
The engine is in real good condition & I'd like to use it... the 5-speed manual FWD trans I'd prefer to swap to an automatic for this project. I'm not clear on what (if any) other FWD doner cars I could get an auto that would bolt-up to the engine. Also, I guess I'm stuck with the ECM because of the EFI & it probably wouldn't work for an automatic trans swap.
Anyone here know if this engine was offered with a carb instead of FI so I could change mine over to a carb set-up. I've been told the distributer also needs the ECM to function. I'd really like to dump the computer & sensor stuff and make this engine work with an auto trans. Any help would be really great. Thanks!
