First a 323 saloon, Malaysian import, nice drive. 2003 Mazda 2 SD, bought for my wife, sold to her daughter after she passed on, traded the 323 for a Demio Escape, which traded today for another 2 SD. Considerable reduction in running costs! Road tax and MPG.

This latest one has done 101K miles but the interior looks as good as new, bodywork is clean too. HOWEVER, driving it home I notice there is a whine from the gearbox going through the gears, seems quiet when cruising though; is there any history of gearbox problems on diesel 2s of 2003/2004 vintage?

I seem to recall hearing that the 1.4 turbo diesel is basically a Ford unit, if this is so, does this include the gearbox?
