Red face Mazda Familia BJ5 2002

Im a new usser n will defiantely enjoy your company.. My ride is a familia bj5 (sport version). very little info is available about it. For starters, i've noticed hat it does just over 6km/L. This is in Nairobi(got lots of jams). Is this normal? If not how's the tuning done?

first things first, you need to know your option package. your car had AWD and turbo options. if it is at least AWD, that would explain the poor fuel economy.

welcome to the family by the way.

Default Is the Familia 2002 also marketed as protege 3?

Hello all you friends? These two cars are so similar and the name familia does not seem common in this community. Is the protege 5 also the Familia in some markets? Mine a familia bj5w is really fuel hungry for its size. A 1500cc, dohc, vvt engine, (2wd and no turbo) with only 6km/l in the city. I need as much info as possible as this ride is superb but for its dry throat. Help..

Yes, the Familia to you is the Protégé to us here in the US.
Do you have the sedan or the Protégé 5-dr hatchback? (I'm thinking hatchback.)

Anyway, about your problem: 6km/l is roughly equivalent to 14mpg, which as you said is not very good.
Is your car a standard shift? Could the clutch be slipping?
If not it might be "dumping" fuel, and if so the problem should be seen as excessive smoke from the tail pipe, or a raw gasoline smell.
Do you have the evaporative recovery system installed in your cars?
Do you run high levels of methanol/ethanol/alcohol in your country?
When were the spark plugs last checked/changed?
How many kms on the car now?

I think we are going to need further information in order to take an educated guess(es) here.

Thank for your reply. The car's an auto and triptronic up to 4 gears. It got just 84000km on the odo. The spark plugs, 2000kms old. it does not smell of gas that's why im spooked. More info as i check it up. Any other places to check. Thanks in advance.

I just bought a BJ5W, 1500cc vvt. This seems to be having the same issue with regard to heavy fuel consumption approx 6km/ltr. it has done 89000km. Any idea how this could be improved??
