Mazda 5 diesel smoke
Hi guys/guyesses
recently bought a 2008 Mazda 5 diesel on 63000. Its has had a new DPF and EGR and I serviced it myself last weekend using genuine parts and oil, along with resetting service info.. (I am a motor mechanic, but despite this completely lost by this one) Anyway, yesterday whilst at lights it started smoking like it was on fire and the exhaust fumes were something else. I’ve never experienced anything like this before in my career and was like when I carry out a regeneration on other vehicles whilst at work. It has no codes in the ECU, and goes very well, no lack of power at all. The smoke cleared immediately afterwards. Although after a 100 mile journey, all at 70mph, when I parked up at home there was still the strong exhaust fumes smell.
Just wondering if there’s anyone out there who has experienced similar who can shed a bit of light on the scenario? Seems very odd to me and I cannot think of any reason for it. I feel it would be odd if this is common during the vehicles standard regeneration procedure.
Thanks,
matt

Glad to read I'm not the only one with this issue. Recently bought a 2007 mazda 5 and it had started doing the same thing. In the beginning I thought it was the cold, then the DPF, and I asked the owner about it, he took a quick look, saw that there was a huge crack in the exhaust system and replaced the full line free of charge.
The random smoking whilme at lights or stop signs persists. He has decided that he has "done all he could" to fix the issue an so won't look further into it, but today it happenned twice, on very short trips. The first time I turned the car off and a ventilator stayed on and it continued to billow smoke a while. The second time I had just arrived home and was convinced the car had taken fire. I opened the bonnet, there was a small stream of smoke coming from the right hand side of the motor, in between the battery and what I imagine to be the exhaust manifold. Difficult enough to see with the plastic cover.
would also like to see if anyone can shed light on this.

Initial went down the DPF route of regeneration, cleaning, finally replacing. Went onto to egr valve replacement, nope. Then finally turbo swap - ouch. Nothing fixes this. Only thing I ever found was the crank case breather hose had become detached. (Remove engine cover, and it's the hose at the back top side). That just reduced the fumes, never solved it.

Nah never solved it. Still got the motor but just accepted it’ll smoke, it’s not work pouring money into it. I’ve spoken to my local diesel specialist who have no idea, it’s serviced and never had any problems with DPF warning lights or anything. It’s too random to be injectors.
quite funny when it is smoking and people cross the road to try and avoid you though when sat at lights!
