Unhappy CX-5/I'm an Idiot

Hi all- I posted this on the CX5 group on Reddit as well and will post here to see if anyone can help out. Thank you in advance:

First, let me get out of the way the fact that I’m an idiot. My fiancée would agree with you all. With that out of the way, I’ll explain my idiocy.

I am currently renting a CX5 while my car is in the shop. I actually love this car and might purchase one in a few months. Last night, I went to the gas station next to my house and ran inside to grab a drink. It’s pouring rain, I hop back in the car, no keys anywhere. I try to start the car, it says the battery on the fob is low and to hold the fob close to the ignition. I looked in the rain for about 2 hours for the fob before I said screw it and walked the 1/8 of a mile back to my apartment. Next day came back, door still unlocked, looked for an hour. Nowhere to be found and the dash still says the same about the battery being low. My question to you all: in order for the car to be unlocked still and the dash saying battery low when I try to start, the keys must still be in my car, correct? If the keys were far from the car, it wouldn’t detect a fob at all and the doors would lock. Again, I know I’m an idiot I just really don’t want to pay Enterprise the 600 bucks they’ll charge me for two (because it’s genius to lock both keys together, negating the need for two in the first place). Any info will help, thanks!

First, you are not an idiot. We have all done it. In fact, with the ability to drive without inserting the keys, your story could have been much worse.

It appears the key is in the car but not close enough to start it. Confirm this by trying to lock the car with the door open (WITH YOU INSIDE OF IT). I bet the locks pop back up indicating the key is in the car.

I would look far from the driver's seat for the keys. I would start in the trunk or possibly under the car and check the back seat next. I doubt it is under the driver's seat (my favorite place to lose my key). This would likely not cause the error.

I think I get the message when I am in the back seat with the key and one of my kids is driving. (It has been a while since I let anyone else drive my Mazda!)

Good luck and let us now how it turns out.
