Default troubleshooting questions for 2004 Mazda 6

We bought a used mazda 6 for my son--love it! It's sporty and fun to drive. Unfortunately the driver's heated seat isn't working--we did purchase an extended warranty which of course does not cover the seat. The estimate for fixing the one seat--the heating element is burnt out--was $650! I have checked out a few sites online that offer after market for about $90 bucks a seat if we fix it ourselves. Obviously he can live without, but if we can do this ourselves for $100 and a days worth of work--it would be worth fixing. Has anyone done this?

Second question..lol...my husband changed the battery in the mazda. Usually he is top notch but he wasn't paying attention and started to hook the battery up with reverse polarity--maybe one second. Of course it blew fuses and he got everything back to normal except the dash lights. If I remember correctly how they worked before the incident. If I turned on the headlights the dash would be bright, but now when I turn on the headlights the dash lights are dim, but if I turn off the headlights the dash lights are bright. Since I cannot remember what they did before the battery issue I was wondering if something got screwed up.I would like to try to fix this ourselves to before we head back to the dealer we bought the car from (who gave my son the car back before thethey were done-called me on my cell phone asking if we could come back to make sure theseat was bolted down in the middle of a blizzard-because they weren't done!)

Thanks for anysuggestions!

If I'm reading this right, then what your car is now is correct. Dash lights typically get dimmer when the headlights on are because it is probably dark outside, so you don't want the brighter lights inside.
