Just because I like poking people with sticks and I am master-of-the-obvious, and a complete bastard, I will quote from page 22, section D of the 2004 Warranty Information (For Mazda6, Mazda B-Series Truck and Tribute only) booklet included with my 2004 Mazda 6s.

Ahem...

Use of Non-Mazda Parts
Owners may elect to use parts other than Mazda Parts in the performance of any maintenance or repairs and such use in itself will not invalidate this warranty. However, use of parts other than Mazda, may cause Mazda to deny an emission performance warranty claim on the basis of uncertified replacement parts used in the maintenance or repair of a Mazda Vehicle if the uncertified replacement parts are either defective in material or workmanship or not equivalent, from an emission standpoint, to Mazda Parts.
Just in case you need a translation of that paragraph servicemgr:

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Moving on...

I did look at all the big-name parts companies I mentioned last night and all of them have a cartridge filter for the 6i. Napa is the only one that provided a photo of the actual filter and it does include both gaskets. I would be interested in knowing if Mazda would invalidate the warranty for performing the spin-on filter conversion. Have you seen anyone come in with one Baby Huey?

By the way Baby Huey, with a gasket pinched what is the average distance/time interval between the oil change and the resulting empty sump? Is it something that could be found if the oil was checked once a week, or are we talking same-day failure here?
If the gasket is pinched, it will leak. If it leaks, most likely you'll smell it as the oil gets onto the exhaust. (Either that or you will have a puddle under your car.) In the absence of both of these, I'd say the gasket it fine.

thanks for the post of the warrany section, I will double my warranty for the 3, but I will bet it will read almost exactly the same. I dont think that he is really a service manager for a dealership, if he did not know that.

fram has great fliters
i dont see why not just use them
Since when did Fram make great filters. They have been rated some of the worst filters on the market. Unless they have dramatically changed in the last few months.

Also, the dealership I bought my P5 at used only Mazda filters for Mazdas. They used Penzoil for all other brands. It seems Mazda does have a higher standard for filters.

I have no doubt that Mazda has a high standard set for the parts they use, the fact remains though, that Mazda does not manufacture the oil filter they use, unless they are made by Ford in the states. If they are made by Ford, i would change it in a second. Its up to the individual owner to decide what filter and oil they want to use.

Last I checked, Mazda's were made by either Purolator or Wix. I can't remember which. Ford doesn't make their own either. Also, they had different specs than the company's own brand that made them. I believe Motorcraft was in the top 2 or 3.

One great place to go for oil related info is bobistheoilguy.com More info than you can shake a stick at!!

I have not ever seen a 6 come in with a conversion for a screw on filter yet nor have I seen the K&N style reuseable. What is this adapter look like and how much do they run dollar wise? There were no markings or indications on the cartridge filter about who manufactures it but the screw on type does say 'Made in the UK' and the AJ04 filter for the V6 says 'Made in the USA'.

They are Mazda parts from a 3i, Baby Huey.

From http://www.mazda6tech.com
Spin-On Filter Mount [Part # L301-14-310] (Recent part# update to L301-14-311)
Spin-On Filter Gasket [Part # LF01-14-342]
Spin-On Filter [Part # LF10-14-302]

EDIT: The only thing Montgomery Mazda lists is the filter itself [>:] I'm not sure how much the other parts run.
