Mazda6 Rust issues?

Hello,
I am considering buying a used 2005 Mazda6 with 42K miles on it. I have read that many 6 owners have had rust problems on the rear wheel arches and surrounding areas. The car looks great and is in great condition. It does not appear to have any rust yet but it was a Florida car for first 3 years so it saw no snow/poor conditions. I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I had a simliar problem with a 2004 Mazda3 that I owned but thought the problem was limited to the Mazda3's.

Is this a common problem with the Mazda6 that I should be concerned about or not? Should I walk away?

Thanks.

I haven't heard of any rust problems, and I'm up in the Northeast. you mentioned that this was a Florida car-- that would reduce the likelihood of any rust problems.
I had a lot of rust issues with the Integra i owned before I got the 6.

I just bought a 6i a couple days ago and on the rear wheel well there was some rust. Nothing huge but it is there. Idk if this is a common problem or not though

No rust issues in oklahoma

My wifes 05 mazda 6 has none what so ever but we dont get much snow in oklahoma.I think salt WATER on the coast of florida may cause some rust issues but not much im sure, unless you've driven it into the ocean,or live close to the ocean

Never heard of the 6 having this issue, but it wouldn't surprise me. I'm dealing with this on my Mazda 3, and it is quite bad.

Sea air increases rusting in cars, so a car in Florida is more likely to rust. It is exposed to salty conditions more frequently than say the mid-west. My in-laws live in Florida near the coast and talk about it being a problem in all cars there.

2006 Mazda6 Sport Wagon rust issue

From Pittsburgh...My 2006 Mazda6 Sport Wagon has begun to rust in and above the left rear wheel area. When I took it to the Mazda dealer they refused to work on it because they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't recur within a year. The vehicle is in otherwise excellent condition with less than 50k miles. I've found a body shop that will try to fix it but they also told me this was a serious problem that would probably happen again . Guess I'll fix it and dump it. Sucks...:(

Obviously you like your 6. Have the body shop look it over really good in regards of structural damage. If it is only cosmetic rust, and the repair is not too bad you can enjoy it for several more years, with or without repair. Typically, the cost of body repair is hard to recover on resale.
