Default Mazda 6 TD bearings

I am the second ownerof a 03 TDon which I am presently having to replace the big end and main bearing shells. The big end shell bearing are completely shot and the mains showing signs of wear. The car had 47000 miles on it when I detected a louder knock than I would expect from a diesel. Around this time I received a call back letter from the dealer requesting that I put the car in for tappet adjustment and for the price quoted I would have expected a full service. I informed the dealer that I was capable of setting the tappets myself whereupon I was told that the fuel injecter seals and gaskets would require replacing as well. This I said should not pose a problem for me and was then which I was told that I also needed to remove the sump to check the oil pump strainer and replace the oil and filter. I was beginning to smell rat like smells.
Bottom line was that I let them do the "tappet adjustment" and they found bearing babbit particles in the sump. Mazda refused to help claiming that the engine was outside the 60000 mile or three year warranty period. I elected to examine the bearings myself which unfortunately on these engines necessitates removing and spliting the engine and gearbox. I found that the big end shell bearings wear badly worn with number four bottom shell having almost no babbit left. I was lucky that the shaft was unmarked. I have since found at least four other cases involving the same engine type in my locality. Has anybody else know of similar cases?
